FAQs About Microdermabrasion

What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion uses crystals in a vacuum system to exfoliate thickened epidermis revealing healthier skin. Microdermabrasion is safe for all skin types and colors and is most often requested by clients looking to reduce the appearance of aging.

Microdermabrasion is generally used to:

  • Polish and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improve the appearance of dull, oily or leathery skin texture
  • Minimize the appearance of large pores
  • Exfoliate and suction clogged pores
  • Improve the appearance of mild acne scarring
  • Even out mild pigment irregularities
  • Enhance penetration of therapeutic skincare products
  • Minimize blemishes
  • Minimize white and black heads

How many treatments do I need?
Some results are achieved with a single treatment. More significant results are achieved with a series of five to six treatments repeated one to three weeks apart with monthly maintenance treatments recommended. The optimum number of treatments depends on the type of skin and your professional aesthetician will suggest a treatment plan.

Does Microdermabrasion have side effects?
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive treatment for the outer layer of skin. Clients report virtually no discomfort, down time or recovery.  Skin may appear red for an hour or two after the procedure. Some clients compare the feeling of tightness and redness to the feeling of a mild sunburn. Your aesthetician will recommend a daily regimen of skincare products to restore moisture and balance.

What are the most common areas treated with Microdermabrasion?
Clients most commonly choose Microdermabrasion treatments for the face, neck, chest and hands.

FAQs About Facial Peels

What skin conditions can a facial peel improve?
Facial peels are typically performed on the face, neck, chest and hands. They can also be performed on the arms and legs. Peels are used to improve a wide variety of skin conditions including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven pigmentation
  • Shallow acne scars
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Age spots
  • Freckling

What is facial peel skin rejuvenation?
Facial peels are used to create an even and controlled shedding of damaged skin cells. This helps to restore skin to a more youthful appearance. There are various types of facial peels; your Schenden’s Spa aesthetician will explain what type of peel is best for you. Depending on your skin type and the desired results, a Glycolic, Salicylic or Jessner may be recommended. Solutions are applied to the skin to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the production of new skin cells. Facial peels tighten the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles; however, they have limits to what they can do. They are not a substitute for a facelift since peels cannot eliminate excessive or lax skin.

How is the VI Peel different than other peels we offer?
The many innovations that created the VI Peel combine to enable the entire continuum of skin types to enjoy the benefits of the peel. For the first time, African-American and darker skin types such as some Asian and Latin skins can experience anti-aging and restorative skin care that was previously unavailable.  It is extremely effective in practically eliminating hyper pigmentation including melasma, the most difficult pigmentation issue to address. The VI Peel also provides excellent results for patients with acne. A consultation with an aesthetician will help determine which peel is right for your skin type and needs.

How long does it take to have a facial peel?
About thirty minutes in total, it has often been referred to as "the lunch time peel".

Is a facial peel painful?
No. There is a mild degree of "tingling" or a slightly itchy sensation. Upon neutralizing the peel, the skin feels fresh and smooth without discomfort.

How many facial peels should I have and how often is it recommended?
Many individuals find that a peel performed every four to six weeks gives optimal results. Glycolic peels complement the regular use of other products that can be used on a regular basis at home. The short term exposure of a higher concentration of a facial peel on a periodic basis helps maintain skin health and appearance.

Will a facial peel remove deep lines or wrinkles?
Peels will not remove deep lines. Medical Laser resurfacing is recommended where wrinkles are advanced. However, a peel will often improve the tone, texture, smoothness and appearance of skin.

FAQs About Dermaplaning

What are the benefits of Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning:

  • Refines and refinishes dull, lifeless skin

  • Safely removes the skin's top layers, fine facial hair, and skin imperfections

  • Reduces acne scarring, uneven pigmentation and fine line wrinkles

  • Can increase absorption of skin-care products for optimum results

What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a non-traumatic method of skin rejuvenation, a “manual exfoliation” of the skin and is sometimes referred to as skin balding or leveling.  Dermaplaning removes the outmost layers of dead skin cells leaving the skin immediately smooth and vibrant.

A trained Schenden’s Spa aesthetician will stroke a sterile surgical blade along tautly held skin, almost like shaving removing vellus hairs along with dead skin cells resulting in a smooth appearance and feel.

Will the hairs on my face grow back thicker?
No.  The hair on our face is vellus hair and vellus hair grows back the same when cut or removed.  Terminal hair (grows under the arms, pubic area, eyebrows, mustache and bear for men, and legs) is coarser hair but it too grows back the same.  People “think” it is thicker because the tip of the hair is blunt from shaving.  Schenden’s Spas trained aestheticians can explain Laser Hair Removal services and waxing options.

How often should Dermaplaning be performed?
The normal skin cycle is approximately 30 days and Dermaplaning can be performed every four weeks or so. Dermaplaning can also be used effectively with facial peels.
